I was shocked and saddened to learn that he had passed. He was a good friend and I can still see his smiling face. I was always impressed by his intelligence and felt he had so much to give to the world.

As my work and family time commitments diminish, I have begun reaching out to old friends from ZAHS; unfortunately it is too late to reach out to Jim. I regret that the last time I saw him was at my engagement-ish party in El Segundo in 1976; there were too many guests to have an in depth conversation with him that day.

I think it was unfair that Jim was not given an algebra class in eighth grade, while the next year my class was. The result of this injustice was that in high school, Jim had to share his math classes with young upstarts like me. I believe that if not for me, he would have been comfortably at the top his math classes all through high school. Instead he would be genuinely surprised if I beat him on a math test. I have never been in a high-stakes competition with someone as gracious as Jim. He treated our math competition as more of a shared interest with an undercurrent of skepticism.  I loved that.
