Andrew Lochrie Bogen- April 29, 1952-August 29, 2022 (70) I’m sorry this information is such a long time coming. At first, his family wanted to wait for everyone to be notified, but then it just seemed too difficult to pay tribute to someone as incredible as my brother. Even though most of his friends are aware of his passing, with the 2026 reunion coming up in Denver, I thought it would be a good time to finally put something on the alumni website. Hopefully, many people will take time to reminisce and make comments for his family to read. In a nutshell, our family moved from Guam to Zama on January 1, 1968, when Andy was a sophomore. Originally, we lived in Chigasaki because he was a surfer, and my dad was the adventurous type. Andy made so many friends on and off-base, and many of his friends from Guam came to visit and became a part of the surfing culture in Japan too. The following is a brief summary of what happened since he left Zama, if anyone has any questions, I’ll check back and see if I can answer them. Andy graduated from the University of Guam with a teaching degree, his passion was literature and he was an amazing educator. First, he taught for the Department of Education on Guam, and then later for the Department of Defense schools, on Guam and in Japan (Sasebo and Yokosuka). Over the years, whenever I ran into his students' parents, they would always gush about how positively he influenced their children. He met his wife, Shawn Swanson, on Guam and they had 6 children together, including 2 identical twins when he was 53. His children kept him very busy, but he never stopped surfing, and even had a sailboat moored at Yokosuka that he would sail off the coast of Japan. He obviously did so much more, but that's the condensed version. I know that when I hear of someone’s passing, I always wonder what happened to them, so I hope it’s not too insensitive of me to include how Andy passed away. His death was very untimely, one afternoon, during the first week of school while swimming at the Yokosuka pool he drowned. No one knows exactly what happened, but the autopsy done at Tripler in Hawaii showed it was not from a heart attack. Unfortunately, the lifeguard didn't see him until it was too late. Although his physical form is gone, the spirit of his wit, wisdom and loving heart are forever present in everyone who loved him.
